Halo Mercury wheels Vs handbuilt open pro's

Does anyone have any thoughts about these wheels and the alternatives that would suit me?

I've been looking at upgrading the alex wheels on my spesh (contary to their bad rep, they've done 3000 miles including a loaded lejog in 3 years).

I really fancy upgrading to something a bit more sprightly and having lurked on many a discussion on wheels it seems to me that acheiving the balance of aero/weight/strength within the required budget is the key to wheels. (I'm almost 14st  )

These seem to acheive it but I can't see any of the reputable retailers with them online.
http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/category/components/wheel-sets/product/mercury-wheels-8973. Halo have a good reputaiton in the mtb world.

At 1546g per set, they seem to give better lightness to £ ratio than the mavic/easton/fulcrum's often recommended on this forum.

Other route would be handbuilt. Would this be a better bet considering my weight and what sort of build/weight could you get an open pro for around £200 set?

I have a set and find them very good. Not done huge milage with them, but at the moment I couldn't tell you off any potential problems. For the money, they are a reasonable weight for a semi-aero design. Surprisingly, they weren't a harsh ride, I was expecting this for a deeper rim section.

www.tredz.co.uk can supply them, take a week or so as they are hand-built to order.

Give paul Hewit a ring re. handbuilts prices. 200 will prob get you 105, DT spokes, prolock nipples, standard OPs and rim tape. Maybe squeeze in Ultegra, I'm not sure. Ribble will be cheaper but the builds aren't as good IME.

  • Paul Hewitt - 217 for Mavic Open Pro ceramics on Ultegra hubs with a 105 cassette included. Very nice and make a big difference to my Spesh Allez Elite. Don't forget to order rim tape!!!!!!!!
