Which bike to choose

OK I'm a roady that's getting into MTBing as well and am looking for a decent entry model for my budget. After looking around the LBS's I have basically come to a choice between:
i) Mongoose Tyax Super @ £300
or
(ii) Gary Fisher Marlin Disk @ £400
What do you guys think? Any good option I'm missing?
My budget is between £300 & £400, so these are at the extremes out what I'm looking to pay.
