Shimano STI help

After a crash last year, my right hand Tiagra lever has become temperamental when clicking down through the gears. It just fails to engage when you need it most which is quite tiresome at the bottom of a climb!

I have since become quite adept at stripping the lever down (yes, I know I shouldn't) but the problem seems to be in some impenetrable plastic housing.

It looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and by a new set of STI levers, the question is which flavour of Shimano?

The 105s are quite competitively priced at £111, and then there is the new Tiagra 4500 range which came out this year.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

This could be a good time to go 10sp. The STIs are by far the most expensive items needed. You just need to add a cassette and chain and you are there. Get the 105 units and you should have change from £150. Your current mechs and chainrings will work fine with 10sp.

    Thanks Johnt

The question is New Tiagra or 105?

I always found the old Tigara shifters a bit soft.
I have no experience of 105 shifters

Anyone using 105 or new Tiagra?

Is the 105 the 10sp deal at Wiggle. If so then using their prices 105 10sp with OE chain and cassette will cost £147.50 and 9sp Tiagra STIs will cost £135.00. They are too new to be discounted much yet. I know what I would be doing.
I am using Ultegra 10sp and find it more comfortable and a nicer action than my Dura-ace 9sp (now relegated to my winter bike). I have never used Tiagra but have used 105 for only a short try out and found it similar to Ultegra.

Tiagra and 105 STIs are identical apart from the cosmetics and that 105 is available in 9 & 10 speed, there performance differences.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Yes I found them, thanks. That is £80 and really tempting! What were they like on delivery?

However, I am still also tempted to spend a little more and go up the food chain for a better product.

Can anyone support my assumption that both the 105s and the new Tiagra are an improvement on the old Tiagras?

    Thanks Monty D

Are you saying that there are performance differences in the new marks or just in the 10 speed versions?

Its just a bike for ***** sake, not the space shuttle.
  • Hi
Just a quick bit of advice for fitting STi's, when tightning them up on the bars, do not over tighten. i set them up so that the levers do not move under gear shifting pressure, but if you come off, or drop your bike the levers fold in so minimizing damage to them.
  • Have you tried just flushing them with GT85? I've had sticky STI's in the past, and sometimes a good flush out clears the muck that is stopping the ratchets releasing (or engaging) properly.

I fixed a pair of Ultegra, and a pair of Dura-Ace that I though had had it like that.
