The Click! Advice needed please. Chainrings

Hi.
This is my first post, I've recently got more into mountain biking and have started to learn how to fix my bike. I've got a Kona Caldera 2005 with mostly standard parts.

Here's my saga!
I've had this annoying click which I noticed and think has got a little worse in the last 3 weeks - especially after I gave the bike a really good clean with degreaser etc.. It's noticable when using chainring 2 out of 3 and when using the smallest rear cog.
First of all I adjusted the gears to get them working perfectly but the click was still there and after a lot of faffing around I took it into a bike shop just for a bit of advise and they commented on how the rear hub was a little loose. So I bought the appropriate tool and tried that - still clicking.
I asked a mate for his advice - it appeared to be making the noise only when pedalling hard on one side and he was pretty sure it was the bottom bracket - bought and fitted the new BB, still a click!
Now I thought it might be worth doing things logically - perhaps should have tried before I started buying new bits and the appropriate tools! Anyway - swapped the rear wheel with my mates - still a click - then swapped pedals - sill a click.
And after all that I noticed one of the rivets on the chainring was catching on the chain as it went round so drilled out the offending rivot and it has reduced the noise significantly. When taking the Raceface crankset apart I noticed there was quite a lot of wear on the largest chainring from where the chain had been rubbing on it.
Now I'm wondering - Is this a common problem? and is it likely to be because the largest chainring is a little bent so it's coliding with the chain? or could it be because the chain is on it's way out and bit too much play in it?
any advice would be appreciated. Atleast I have a nice smooth BB, and a nice smooth spare BB!

Advise, do not use the smallest rear cog on the middle ring.
the "rivet" you removed was there to aid the gear shifting. there should be another one 180 degrees away.
anyway do not use middlefront with small rear.
oh and you may wish to get a new big ring if you shifting is not so good."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Oh bollocks - I thought the rivet was for attatching a bash guard or something! The sound it made really doesn't sound healthy - kind of a creaking sound which is why we thought it might be the BB. Also it's not always been like that.
I thought it was ok to use the second chain ring on any of the rear cogs. Even when using the smallest chainring and smallest cog which I know you're not meant to do, you don't get the noise.0 -
So I'm looking at getting a new chain and a new 44t chainring - went to the LBS and asked them how much to replace the raceface 44t chainring - the guy suggested get n XT instead and that if I was getting a new chain too then it might be worth getting a new rear cassette. Now I've done a fair bit of reading and I seem to get conflicting ideas.
Do i really need to get the works? and is it fine to mix race face and xt chain rings? Quite a lot to learn!0
