you could try www.cyclosport.org they have a list of sportive rides all over the country.Quite local to you, try the NorthernRock cyclone in Newcastle ( 31,62 or 100 miles) in June. Also White Rose Classic, Ryedale Rumble, Cumberland Challenge, the list goes on. Understand the WRC,RR, & CC are pretty hard events so,as I don't know your fitness level, may be better to choose slightly less demanding routes first.Did the Northern Rock Cyclone this year and going for it again in 08, highly recommend it,entries open on Dec 1st I believe. www.northernrockcyclone.co.uk

depending on your fitness you could try the Etape du Dales but at 110 miles and 3500m of climb it may be a bit much for you in only your second year. However if you are up for this ride it booked up last year in under 4hours so you will have to be prepared for this and be online waiting for the site to open which may be earlier than specified.
    http://www.etapedudales.co.uk/
The Etape was the first one I did and loved it, If you're up for the Etape check out the Rydale Rumble as well http://www.bcyorkshire.com/html/the_ryedale_rumble.htm , be warned if you thought the Etape was hard this one includes Rosedale Chimney and New for 2008 my favorite hill Boltby Bank

Not a sportive but the Hell of the North in September is a good ride organised by Darlington Council, still 100 miles but only 1000m or so of climb and the hills that there are are not too steep

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail
Hills are just a matter of pace

If you are reasonably fit you should enter the 62ml Cyclone event. Website is www.northernrockcyclone.co.uk The 62 ml ride will be challenging for you without being a slog. Lots of quiet roads and nice cafe's as well as 3 feed stations on this route.

It's a great weekend as you can see the top riders race on the friday and sunday as well and Leeds is only 90mins away from the event.

Entries open on the 1st December on the website. look forward to seeing you next year.

Why is it too hard for second year? :D
Surely it depends on his ability and his fitness level and his preperation?

It is perfectly feasable for some one with good fitness levels to be able to prepare for such an event within 3 to 6 months months comfortably.

Agree totally. I started cycling in January. Completed the L'Etape (120 miles / 4500m climbing) in July. And I am nothing special.

    Just do it.

Some of the rides on the cyclosport.org website look fantastic. I am minded to have a go at them early next year before they are "offically" open to entries just to test myself. I think that the Cheshire Cat ride looks like a real leg buster - 1 mile of 25% gradient

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • The Dave Lloyd challenge is open for entries taking place 29th June 2008. There are 2 options 140 miles 5,000m climbing or 69 miles with 2,000m climbing.

    www.davelloydmegachallenge.com.

    Looks awesome!!

Just ride them in sportive, its more fun :D
Is that correct about 25% for a mile? That seems a bit extreme, maybe 1 mile with a 25% section but not 25% average, thats over 1300'.

It's not 25% for the whole 1-mile climb - but the steep bit is very steep!

Photographs don't usually give a true sense of the gradient of a climb but that photograph really does show it all too clearly. I'm planning to do that sportive and now I'm scared!
  • All sportives have a bit like that, I wouldn't worry, well not much anyway....

    hi Welshy (you aint old)
I've got a triple on my current bike but when I buy a new one, it'll either be triple again or compact with as low a gear inch as I can buy. :D
I've got a job on tonight. De-rusting my husbands bike and fitting a tyre. Both of which I've never done before. It's good to try something new eh? and better to try it in the comfort of my house than 50 miles from home when it's p'ing down.

the only bit on the Cyclone that is like that climb is the Ryals and it's only 33% for about 100 metres :lol:

33% for 100 meters would make most people walk.

agree oldwelshman, but such is the cameraderie and spirit of the northern rock cyclone everyone encourages everyone else.I saw some walking up the Ryals, but vast numbers cycled all the way up on all sorts of bikes. Alot of those were from th e shorter ride but were determined to reach the top without touching down. Amazing what people can do when they try and receive support.

entries open this friday afternoon for the 2008 Cyclone. You can enter online if you go to www.northernrockcyclone.co.uk. The website is currently being updated with the online entry system and if you rode the 2007 event you may just see yourself in a picture going up the Ryals! it's going to be a big weekend so don't miss out on all the fun. :D

I dunno - that bit looks massively steep. Not sure I will be able to get up that on my 39/25  Looks like it is time to upgrade to a Dura-Ace compact (do Shimano do one?) in order to get me through.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

Rosedale Chimney is a fun hill, only a few miles from my original home patch. I've climbed it a few times as a teenager on a old 10 speed (i.e. 5X2) racer. Nice route actually, passes through my home village and then up Limber Hill, which is pretty steep although not as long as the Chimney. I might have to do that one year soon.

I can still get up it on a 39/25 so I'm sure everyone else should be able to do it. Used to race up it on a 42/21 but that was a long time ago

I think you are mis-parsing, the only refers to the 100 metres. I hope.

Thanks for that Peter, maybe I should start doing some squats to try and build in some strength rather than go for component changes on the bike  I will have to take a drive over there and reconnoitre that particular section.

as the event website for 2008 is now ready to go I have pushed the button a day early. You can now all enter online on the event website www.northernrockcyclone.co.uk. All details about next years event are on there along with pictures from this year.
The whole event has just been awarded the status of one of the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative (NGI) events for 2008 and as such will be promoted both Nationally and Internationally. :D:D
