Hi

I am about to buy a new bike

Id appreciate thoughts on wheels

I have the coice of an Ultegra equipped bike on mid range wheels or a 105 spec bike on Ksyrium ES's or Fulcrum racing 1's

My question is are the Racing 1's or ES's a good deal and can be used year round week after week, or are they just a racing wheelset for occasional use?

Common sense says 105 and posh wheels makes more sense
But only if the wheels are up to it

Thoughts welcome

How about Ultegra and handbuilts lighter than the expensive factory wheels? You can get something really nice handbuilt which will save you far more than the difference between those groupsets.

I have Mavic Kysirium SSCs which I used all year with no problems, including 2 etapes.
The ES are good strong wheels - you won't have any problems doing what you propose.

105 is amazing quality for the money so I wouldn't hesitate to go with plan A.

    i'd go 105 & posh wheels

even from a financial point of view - the ultegra groupset is only75quid more than 105 - but the ES / racing ones are a fair bit more expensive than mid range (assuming mid range is something like racing5's or ksyrium elite)

Option A every time, I run 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace on my bikes, and there is not much difference between 105 and Ultegra. Fulcrum 1 are meant to be stiff and (I have heard) wooden in feel. I have found my ES's to be very reliable and have a good feel to them, although they do not spin up particularly fast.

I run my posh handbuilts day in day out, no problems.

I've run Fulcrum 1's for over a year and they're bombproof. Spin up fast and feel pretty damn good to me. Also have a pair of Zero's which are fantastic as well. So yeah I'd go 105 and Fulcrum 1's.
