hi,

Have purchased myself a GPS unit to help me navigate on the trails and having to stop every 15 mins to see if i am going in the correct direction.

What are peoples thoughts on Memory Maps or Tracklogs?

Also, is there sufficient detail on a 1:50,000 or do i need to go 1:25,000.

Cheers

I went through this a couple of months ago and went for Tracklogs because:

They cover the whole country with 1:25000, I find 1:50000 too large a scale.

And in the short term it can work out cheaper (although long term Memory Map might be cheaper). That probably doesn't make a lot of sense, I'll try to explain it a bit better, I'd just forked out £300+ on a Garmin Vista HCx and Topo GB, didn't have a lot of cash left, £ 25 got me the tracklogs 1:25000 for my area, I'd have had to spend £50 - £60 to get me started with Memory map.

As and when I go ride in a new area I can buy the appropriate map for £ 25 which doesn't feel too bad (plus if you want you can define the area you want with Tracklogs, you're not just stuck with buying the standard areas covered by the OS maps so you can buy a map centred on where you live etc.).
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

I use Memory Map and love it! The 1:50k maps for the south were included for £45, and they're more than adequate for routefinding and plotting routes. Having said that, I do still yearn for 1:25k electronic maps, and am contemplating buying a local-area Tracklogs 1:25k map, however that's another £40 or so :(

At the end of the day a 1:50k map used to plot a route or program a GPS is more than adequate. However if you're after navigating and compass by map then the extra features of the 1:25k maps (field boundary's for instance) can prove invaluable.

Either MM or TrackLogs are fantastic pieces of software, and they're cheap (compared to equivalent paper maps) for what they do. I'd always advocate buying them rather than downloading them to keep the development ongoing.
