What mechanical disc brake would you recommend for uner £40? I only want mechanical because i dont know anything about hydralic discs and i think mechanical brake are more simple. But How good is a decent mechanical disc compared to a cheap hydralic one?
They need to be suitable for dirt jumping and come in around 160 rotors, but a bit bigger wont matter.
I lie the look of the avid bb7, what do you think?

I need to order the disc brake very soon, but the bb7 doesn't come in 160mm rotor size on chainreaction, which is what i want.
What about the avid bb5 is that any good? I compared the specs between the two on there website and there isn't much difference0 -
having used a bb5, i'd say its excellant; the closet perfomance to a hydraulic as you can get i think. they felt consistent,as in they didnt grab unlike my previus experience with cable discs, and were fairly powerful. only downside is having to adjust the static pad evey so oftne.I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

bb5 is no where near as good as the 7 but it'll get the job done if your a dirt jumper. i've heard you can get road versions of the bb7 which work well but i think come with a 160mm rotor. advantage if mech discs is you can run a gyro but if you don't want one then dont be scared of hydralics they are getting simpler and simpler and might not be as much work as you think. if your still wary of it though definatly go for mechanical or you'll be wasting £80 upwards on something you can't fitI took falling off bikes...and turned it into an art!0

I have a pair of Hayes MX2s with avid levers that I'm willing to let go for £25. They came on my Kona Kikapu and have harsly been used.
They're going on eBay otherwise.
Let me know if your interested. I can send you photos.
PaulI'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.0 -
Gyros are more difficult to run because you need a lever that pulls a lot of cable like a BMX brake lever, because v-brake levers do not pull enough cable to get the giro to move properly. The Avid BB7 is by far the best mech disk brake, but the gusset chute is worth looking at.0

The BB7 road version will apparrently work with a BMX lever because it uses the same cable pull ratio.0

Thanks paulym31 but ive already bought the bb5. Just to say i only dirt jump and a bit of 4x and with a 160mm rotor it has better power and modulation than the tektro one i used to have.0
