Any good bike shops in Cambridge/Suffolk area?

The title pretty much says it all. I've lived down here for over a year now and have yet to find a decent road shop. All the shops I've seen so far seem to cater for commuters, students, or the budget market. I don't expect to find a Sigma Sport or Dauphin but somewhere which has a decent selection of road stuff and clothing would be great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I lived in Cambridge for 18 months and had a similar problem. The best I found, and it really was the best of a bad bunch, was the City Cycle Centre in Ely.
  • yup absolutely agree. the guy that runs it is very knowledgable and they stock a good range of stuff. The only place in cambridge which has good amounts of clothing and bikes - Stockists of Assos, giordano, campag and pinarello and various other 'high end' goods. It's above the hobby craft place opposite the Costa.

Aside from that there's Townsend Cycles just before going into Cambridge before Victoria Bridge which is pretty big but I think more a hybrid town bike kind of a shop. And then out the back of Cambridge itself towards the Station theres another one which sells specialized bikes and bits and also Assos stuff. Pretty cramped though. Errm there's also a small one in St.Ives - richardsons? - that is good for all the normal bikey bits - again more of an everyday cycle need shop, sells cateye lights and high 5 energy stuff from what I remember.

Your best bet though is City Cycles in Ely.

  • as an aside - if you're local come on the club rides on Sunday with the CCC. Meet outside Addenbrookes@9am.

Thanks for the tips. I've been into City Cycles in Ely and I agree that it is a reasonably well stocked shop. I guess I've been spolied in the past living in Yorkshire where I had Race Scene, Je James, Chevin Cycles, Aire Valley Cycles and many others within easy reach.

If I can drag my backside out of bed early enough I'll try to get down to the clubrun you mentioned. That was set to be another topic for a future post, as I rarely bump into any other riders around the Newmarket area where I live.

    Thanks
  • for sure gimme a shout I'm in Somersham but would be happy to join you in Newmarket for a ride it's not far. If you do make it tomorrow come say hey I'll be on a Tarmac.

There are a number of not bad shops which are not listed here

JT Cycles which are between ely and littleport, on the old A10, they are behind a van garage

Ben Haywards in Cambridge on Kings Parade

Also Howes in Cambridge near the catholic church ( think its on hills road)

    Hills? what are they
  • Elmy Cycles in Ipswich. When I lived in Cambridge I went to Mikes Bikes and Ben Haywards I think. Both seemed well stocked at the time.
