So - do you run a 4 wheeled machine as well as a 2 wheeled one?

It's just a hill. Get over it.

yup, got an Audi A4, we decided we needed a car when moving south of the river... to be fair it's been bloody useful.

I'm very curtious towards cyclists and I notice other cyclists when they're in their car as well

I voted own a car, I actually own two, but neither of them are for road use, one is the rally car and the other is the spares car, I got rid of the family wagon soon after taking up cycling.

My wife owns a car - which I drive occasionally. I'm especially corteous to all forms of road users - especially cyclists - mainly out of guilt - I used to be the ultimate anti-car cyclist.

For me the main qualification for being a motorist should be that you've been a cyclist for a number of years.

Its funny how angry some motorists get just cos you slow down to let someone cross the road or give way to a cyclist.

I have a car, a bit of a gas guzzler (17mpg  ) - I am trying to use it less and less and hope to give it up and join the City Car Club at some time in the future - they have a car parked just around the corner from me.
  • I'm never going to own a car again. So expensive and they only let you down and depreciate faster than ASDA bananas rot. Tescos deliver my shopping and I work in and around London so screw it!

Wife has a car that I use occasionally, I sold my car at the start of the year, was fed up of rising fuel costs, service charges, tax, insurance etc etc.. Still got my motorbike though for when I want to get my adrenaline kicks :D

One of the (many? few?) benefits of living and working in London is that I have no need for a car.

I may be joining a car share club when I move in the new year though.
  • My driving is generally to work sites, so get my work to hire one for me. Sold my car earlier this year 'cos I just wasn't using it enough for personal journeys and the cost of upkeep and insurance made it a waste.

I do enjoy driving my car, but if the missus didn't insist we had one I'd probably go without (did do for the first 28 years of my life).

I absolutely LOVE riding my cycle, and I was much more excited at buying my last bike than I was buying my last car, and its a very desiarable car.
  • My wife and I own one car, which she needs for her job (multiple sites/rural area). I either bike or bus to work.

  • Car - ah yes, I had one of those once! A Nissan Micra - It spent so long parked outside my house it nearly got listed! Gave it up when we worked out how much it was costing to keep it 'just in case we needed it'. Got rid of it about 2 years ago and haven't looked back since. What few journeys we can't do by bike, we do by train or bus and very occasionally borrow the in-laws car.

What we've saved we spend on a good holiday every year.

We've got two - my car has hardly moved in the last 3 months - just get's used at weekends. It's a mid sized family saloon- was commuting 15000 per year in it, now zero ! I'm having to make sure I start it in this cold weather just to charge the battery.

The wife has a nippy Yaris we've had since new, 8 years ago - been 100% reliable in that time, and just runs the kids about. Does 50mpg.

i'll proberbly have a car when i can afford it as where i live in coventry and try to get to (random local places in the middle of no where) its hard to do on public transport

    its more convenience really.

at my parents its a 1.5 hour bus journey that i have walked in an hour, biked in half an hour to get from my parents house to town just due to public transport being rubbish

I own a car. Rural area so really need it. I try and cycle to work 5 days a week (Usually only manage 3-4 though with other stuff that crops up that requires a car).
I was thinking about getting rid of the car, as I could get my shopping from Tesco.com or equivalent, but public transport is rubbish and unreliable. I did try to see how long I could last without a car but I need to use it once a week for some voluntary work I do, so didn't last long!
  • Don't really have the need for a car on a regular basis so use this service which is absolutely brilliant if you live in the capital...

  • Living in London I have absolutely no reason to own a car.
If I ever need to own one I'll spend the least money possible on a safe, economical and reliable car. I'd prefer to spend the money on a nicer bike or to improve my house.

No car, as I don't have a licence for one (though I did pass my motorcycle test 18 years ago). I walk or cycle most places, or if it's too far public transport usually does tthe job.

I've got a car but I hardly use it, at the moment it sitting on my folk's driveway 15miles away.
  • My wife's the driver. It's her car.

Failed my 3rd test in 1991 and haven't bothered since.
Used to have a bus pass but due to the fact the buses being shite and me getting a bike I got rid of it. Saved a few bob I can tell you.
A lot fitter than I was too.

  • I live in south london as well and have a car. Use it about once a week in summer and maybe once every two weeks in winter. use it sometimes for shopping, but more often to get out of london/see friends outside london etc. try to keep use of it down, not because i can't afford it, but because I am generally pretty anti making journeys by car when foot, bike or public transport will do.

i'm all in favour of jacking up the congestion charge, closing loopholes, taxing high emission vehicles, heavily taxing second parking permits, closing roads to cars etc.
  • No car, but do own a motorcycle, for the days when I just can't face cycling, and for a buzz now and again. Wife owns a car, (52MPG :D )) absolute necessity for her, as the route to work has no public transport what so ever*

I'm not a fair weather cyclist, don't mind it cold and dry but I don't like the rain much, which is usually when I use the moto.

    * brings up a good point, how the hell are folks supposed to get out of their cars and onto Public transport, when there is no public transport to speak of.?
