Attitude is the barrier to cycle use. People almost faint when I tell them I paid £400 for a bike. I don't tell them how much my touring bike cost. They wont understand!

I envy people in cycle growing cities like London and Oxford. I'ts lonely being a commuter up north.[/quote]

    Where up north???
I bike a minimum 10 miles each way to work (in Cramlington, Northumberland) and so does a colleague from Gateshead, 2 from Whitley Bay, 1 from Morpeth and a couple from Ponteland. Thats all year, all weather. On the way, I see the same folk every day:-bear in mind that I set off at 6.30, so I assume lots of others set out later.
Its GR8 up north! (except for the wind.....)
  • in Birmingham the traffic is stationary at 8-10 and 4-6. last year there was one day when it snowed and the jam lasted about 6 hours for most people and the only way home was by bike. i think people have still not forgotten and this is why we see more bikes.

    p.s. my first post!
  • Not sure if it's getting busier where I am as the routes into London always seem to be brimming with cyclists! The one day I did notice an increase was during the tube strikes! Especially when I got to Kennington and the south side of London Bridge! Needless to say it didn't take long to lose the pack :-D

During winter there seems to an increase in the proportion of girls on the road. Perhaps they are more hardy than their male counterparts? Sadly they are sensibly dressed at this time of the year, with skimpy lycra outfits in short supply :(

Maybe your just to busy looking at the skimpy lycra clad females during the summer to notice the rest who are dressed sensibly :-)

Everyone here in London thinks I'm mentally-challenged for riding in, and they're all quite stylish so the day-glo brings on looks of total horror...!!!

It's just a hill. Get over it.

I believe that day-glo clothing is de rigueur in Hoxton these days, while pootling around on one's BMX screaming into a hands free Bluetooth headset. Respec'.
