My first commute in a long time!!!

Well I finally did it. I arranged all of my cycling gear last night, went to bed early and got up in time to cycle to work this morning for the first time in years.
It is a 6.5 mile commute, managed it in just over 20 minutes but it is through some of the craziest traffic that the world has ever seen.
Despite that, I now have a huge smile on my face and feel really elated and ready for the day ahead.
I used to cycle quite a lot, but since moving to Jakarta I have been puting off going out on the bike. About 1 month ago (after having been here 9 months) I finally plucked up the courage to go cycling at the weekend (they close some of the roads to traffic on a Sunday) and quickly was re-bitten by the bug.
After getting my legs again and plucking up some more courage - I finally did it.....just hope I can keep it up......watch this space. :P

Hi thanks for the message.
On the subject of pollution, I experienced a nightmare on Friday evening going home. I was stuck in some traffic with about 5 buses, millions of mopeds and loads of those little put-put 3 wheeler taxis that spew out loads of black fumes.
I was litterally stuck in the middle of it and could taste the filth in every breath.
Over the weekend, I had a sore head and was constatntly tired - do you think this is connected?
Also, has anyone used one of those masks you see commuters with? Do they work, do they restrict breathing significantly?
Cheers....
PS - didn't stop me cycling again this morning!!!!0 -

Think yourself lucky yu weren't in a car yourself, where the pollution would've been much much worse, by the order of thousands IIRC.0 -
PRJ, I have spent the last 9 months in a car and I would be happy for anyone to come and prove to me that the pollution is worse inside. I just don't believe i was as bad as what was outside.
The stuff I was breathing in on Friday was thik with pollutants, you could taste it and my face was black when I got in.
Maybe the study you refer to was conducted in a normal city where cars have to undergo MOT's and stuff.
This is not the case here.0
