clipless questions

i've decided on going clippless in the forseable future and just have a few basic questions about the change over. i've searched the forum and read most the advice about learning to use new pedals and also noticed that the SPD-SL is suggested alot so have pretty much decided to go with that system. my main worry is that i ride a 25ish year old bike and that the fitting of pedals these days will be different, from the pictures i can only guess and thought it would be best to ask advice from those who know more - which it usually seems is everyone on this site!!

    should still 9/16ths but just to check what cranks are fitted?
