Night riding: Spiral spoke reflectors

Many years ago, a friend of mine had some spring-like spiral reflectors that fitted around individual spokes. They must have been made of silver Scotchlite or some similar material, and were by far the most effective wheel reflectors I have seen, far better than the bog-standard plastic white ones that came fitted to my bike (and have since broken off).

Does anyone know who made the spirals, and if they are still available? I've tried Googling, but have had no luck, and now it's getting dark so early, I could really do with a set!

Cheers,

James.

I think the company was called 'Moonshine' and they also did trouser clips of a similar style cause I use them when wearing jeans on my 1 mile commute.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

  • Ahh...spokey dokeys...what an utterly pointless invention!

Thanks for a possible name redvee, but I still can't find any sign of them on the web. Maybe I'll just have to settle for the Kelloggs Cornflake ones on Ebay. :D
  • only prob with spoke related thangs ofc is u cant see them from directly in front /behind the bike..so of limited use imho

  • A while ago I bought some "Fire Flies" little widgets that screw on as valve caps, and flash tiny but bright LED's blue/red. They only come on when it's dark, and they are motion sensitve, so you don't have to fiddle with them. They do seem to have an effect on car drivers, in that they really aren't sure what's going on and give you a wide berth, so result there, and side on visibilty is improved immensely.
Down side is they do tend to eat the batteries, however I have found a source of CR927 batteries at less than 22pence each, only problem you have to buy 100 to get them at that price.

Another vote for tyre flies / flashing valve caps here.

I've had a number of people ask my where I got mine from as they are impressed by the all round visibility. nd thios is in Lonodn where people rarely talk to you so they must be good.
