CatEye EL 5 LED front light

Morning,
Bought this Cateye front light yesterday. Put the batteries in turned it on and it seemed quite dim. The unit was hot. Took out the batteries (which were also hot) and checked the polarities were correct, which they were. Tried another set of batteries. Same problem.
Am I being a bit dense, or is the light knackered?
Cheers

I have the 510, never had a heat coming from it.
Maybe worth taking it back and comparing it to another.FCN 100
