Edit: Started this as Exposure maxx thread but my fool or a friend just told me he bought the Hope lights so change every refence to them heh! These ones http://www.hopegb.com/voir_visled_image_2.html

Hi

Anyone here run one of the Exposure maxx lights? Reason I ask is that a friend just bought one of the 2 Led ones and when he turns it on, his wireless speedo and heart rate monitor lose their signals! I have never read anything about this in reviews etc but I am sure I saw a note on Use's website the other day about it. Surely some of the magazine testers run wireless speedos and hrm's? I can only presume it has no or very little internal shielding and there must be regulations for this? I was going to buy one of the single led joystick ones as a helmet light but not if it means my sensors which are also wireless wont work.

Comments

  • I have heard a few people saying that it stops there wireless computers working. I have only used an Exposure bar light once and my HRM (wrist mounted) worked fine.

I normally use a helmet mounted Joystick (with bar mounted HID) and have no problems using a HRM, either a Polar watch, or a handlebar mounted Garmin.

ok cheers. I think he is going to send the Hope back and get one of the 2 led Exposuremaxx lights which I insist to him that I told him to buy in the first place so not sure why he went for the Hope anyway. It is a good light but he could have avoided these issues
  • You may find the USE bar mounted light gives the same problem with the wireless computer. Could be worth contacting USE to check first.

Hmm I thought it was just a HID "feature" but reading the Exposure FAQ...

"Does a Race or Enduro light confuse my wireless cycle computer?
Yes it can. There can be some localised interference to other transmittted signals such at wireless cycle computers and heart rate monitors. The interference will be greater on the higher light settings. Our suggestion is to more the light and computer as far apart as possible. The Exposure Lights' aluminum body does a good job at shielding most of the "pulsing" from the light but if the computer is very close it can effect the readings."

    Light&Motions FAQ:
"Why doesn’t my wireless computer or HRM work when my ARC HID light is on?
The ARC HID light produces a weak EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) that interferes with most wireless transmitters on cycle computers and heart rate monitors. You will need to either move the computer away from the light, approximately 12”, use a hard wired computer, or ride without your training device and just enjoy the night! "

Personally I use a bar mounted Exposure Enduro Maxx that sits about 4 inches from a Cateye Micro wireless stem mounted computer and I haven't notice it affect it. then again I rarely pay attention to computer when off-road, let alone off-road at night :p

Do the exposuremaxx lights perform better than the Hope LEDs? I'm trying to decide which ones to buy!!
  • Hope lights are some of the very best I have ever used. There a great price two. I would recommend getting two double LED sets. One for the bars and one for your head. Also the Lupine so some stunning lights however they do tend to cost the earth. Lumicycles are good as well in that there in the UK and have great support. There also very easy to customize for your application. However they are a tad old hat.

I was planning a group buy on hopes. But as no one is interested I am just getting my self two sets to call my own.

Hope have a better spread on he beam and being hope have superb support. For the cost of the USE you could get the Hope and have change for a good head light. Or I could probably get you two sets of the Hope for not much more than the RRP on the Enduro MaXx
  • So, in summary, the hope lights are really good but you can't use any wireless electronics on you bike at the same time?

Back to the original posting, I'm amazed that Hope are allowed to sell something that gives out such interference?
  • I am fairly sure that the current Hope LED lights are more comparable to the older USE lights, the newer USE Maxx range are brighter. I haven't seen them together, but looking at the manufacturer's webpages this seems to confirm it. I think I saw somewhere that Hope will be selling an updated LED light in the near future.

Yeah i've heard about the new Hope LED. 1000 lumens are quoted which seems pretty bright! So now its a choice of one super bright handlebar light or two less expensive lights to use in tandem...

I was gonna buy the hope LED but they where back ordered for 3 weeks..my LBS had a hope HID so i took that for a reduced price instead..
The light is awesome..a bright blue/white piercing light that extends a long way with real good peripheral vision...
I was gonna get the LED's and grab a secondary light but i wont need it now..

Big thumbs up for the Hope vision HID's
