Are there a few ways to do this? I have read about a product from Surly which I think is exchanged for the cassette mechanism? I am talking about a modern cassette hub rather than an old screw on freewheel btw. I have also heard about people welding the mechanism to bind it. Is there an easier way?

  • as far as I know mate, its a bad idea.

welding it could lead to catastrophic failure at the worst possible moment i'm guessing!

the devices from surly and planet-x typically are to convert to a singlespeed i.e. you can still freewheel using the hub mechanism.

also... your bike kinda needs horizontal dropouts if you're going fixed... or unless you get *lucky* with it.

    Fixxer.
Converts a Shimano Cassette hub into a Fixed type Hub
(Except Silent Clutch or Pre-'97 Dura Ace)
    Replaces Cassette body.
Allows you to keep a good wheel for more than one thing !

£60 though and you still have the issue of chain tension.
