If you lift the rear wheel of your bike off the ground and turn the pedals backwards, should the rear wheel begin to turn?

    No,not unless it's a single fixed gear bike.

    Actually, my wife's bike has a very stiff freewheel, so it is possible to do this - although application of any pressure or indeed just placing it back on the ground "stops" this.

    Yes, it probably will start to turn due to friction in the freehub bearings and pawl mechanism. Nothing to worry about unless the freehub bearing gets very stiff when you try to turn it by hand.
