WD40 for cleaning?

Finally got round to giving my commuter bike a thorough clean. Have been using WD40 to shift the grime as have found it difficult getting into the free hub and inside the derailleur casing. I know WD40 is a hydrophobic but in the back of my mind I seem to remember the fact that it leaves a residue which is quite waxy and I wonder if this could be a problem with other lubricants.

Anyone know?

WD40 or water displaecement thingy we got correct on our 40th attempt does just that, it breaks the surface tension of the water and forces it out, you then apply lube to the area, the waxy residue shouldnt be a problem but should not be used as lubricant

Don't spray too much near the block as it will damage any grease.... run a rag in between the sprockets
  • Thanks both of you.
You've answered exactly what I wanted to know.... Ultimately that I won't be doing any harm. Thanks for the tip about the block too.
