Weak Ankle

About three weeks ago I went over on my left ankle - it was while I was mountian biking (cycle shoes and a wet rock). My foot went inwards - it was painful but with a fairly long ride still to complete I just got on my bike and continued. We were camping so didn't have access to an ice pack that I probably should have put on the ankle or elevate afterwards when it swelled up.
But the thing is now - I find myself going over on that ankle all the time! Even when I'm just walking along it will just go from under me.
So I'm just really asking - is it just still mending? And does anyone know of any exercises that I can do to make it stronger?

I'm just recovering from torn ankle ligaments so know a bit about this! Like HBD says I think you have probably damaged them but not torn (chances are you'd need to use crutches to walk if they were torn). I did my ankle in 10 weeks ago, I spent 10 days on crutches, then started walking (in a limp style!), that improved quite quickly but I've only just been cleared by my physio to do any running on it.
Exercises you can try are things like heel raises, lunges, standing on your toes only and squating down, standing on your bad leg, etc...... if you have a wobble board then that would be good thing to use.
The link provided by HSD is very good, I had to stand on one leg on something uneven while someone was throwing a ball to me!
It may be worthwhile going to see a physio, there may be some scar tissue, which whilst it aids recovery it can also form in awkward places which can cause problems later on.
Have you asked this question on the medical section of the forum? There are some doctors who frequent there who may be able to help further.0 -
I tore my ligaments in my ankle about 9 years ago. Unfortunately I seem to go over on it really bad about once every two years or so. I dont think mines will ever get any better but it does not seem to effect cycling if I give it proper rest.
I wear boots such as timberlands as much as I can as I always seem to hurt my ankle in summer months when wearing trainers a lot.Brian B.0
