I have been asked to look at a felt jump shot 606i which is used by a young lad who has fallen off and broken his collar bone. The problem with it is the rear disc brake which seems to be on a ratchet system that works when you are going forward but if you apply the brake and roll the bike back the brake rotor is clamped by the pads and rotates independently of the wheel which means that he has no rear brake if he is rolling backwards.
The felt web page gives the specifications for the brake as being:
Hayes MX-2XC Mechanical 6” Rotor RR Only
I have been told that the brakes work this way as this is the way they have been designed to perform some trick or other is this correct?
Is there anyway of aapting the rear wheel so the rotor does not rotate or does he need a new wheel?
I aim still learning and havent seen this set up before.
thanks for your help

it sounds like something is SERIOUSLY wrong here.

have a read ofthe brake info on parktools or take some pictures and post them up.

the disc should not rotate independantly of the wheel.

  • I have striped the wheel down and it appears that the Hayes rear disc is bolted with 6 bolts to a nut which screws to the wheel this unscrews freely. There is no locking system like there is on the shimano system. I assume that this should be held with locktite. Any other ideas anyone?

i have a feeling the hub is a cheap flipflop BMX hub that has had a spin on disc mount made for it.

needs some serious thread lock and a right heave to tighten it correctly.

i would take it to a bike shop as you do not want the resopnsablity of it coming lose again.

  • Amazingly the father of the lad who has broken his collar bone took the bike back to the shop where it was bought and asked whether the rotor should move. They said that it was supposed to move like this to enable a specific trick to be done !!
So i guess that trick must be the one where your brake fails you crash and break your collar bone!!
I think he has mastered this one.

  • I am not able to put the pictures on line at the moment but i am fairly confident that rotor has not been assembled correctly,i.e locked in place and as such when the brake is applied and the bike goes backwards the rotor unscrews.
I will try and get some loctite to lock thread
