Medium Cage rear mech - really necessary?

I have recently changed my chainring from a XT 44/32/22 to a raceface 32/22 double.
I know the rule of thumb is 2 rings= medium but my XT rear mech is brand new and I dont really want to buy another - anyway I cant seem to find a medium cage shimano rear mech anyway - only SRAM and I really don't want to have to shell out for new shifters as well......
If chain length is set correct - can ai get away with my existing long cage?
