I am 6'4, with a 34 inside leg, any idea what size frame i should be riding? I have an old 21" GT at the moment which I am looking to replace. 21", 22" or 23". Prop is when you get to the larger sizes most shops dont have them in stock to try. Bit of a concern when spending £850 (ish) on a new bike and not being sure.

All these bikes come with straight bars & I will be fitting raisers straight away.

I am short listing (all 08 bikes);
Cube ltd race
Trek 6700
Scott scale 50 (with a fork upgrade)

Any help would be welcome.

Testing them out for size, that's the only way to be sure. Maybe there are some forum users who have the bikes in question in the same size.

You should ideally have at least 2" clearance between your crown jewels & the top tube when standing oner the bike.

Yes I do hope some taller riders here can help me with this one.
  • Here I am.

At 6ft 7inches I'd place a bet I'm the tallest here. I have an 06 GT in XL frame, its 21". The thing is I have nothing to compare it to as I haven't ridden for years before we got our bikes this year.

You see at my height I bet you that most bike manufacturers just couldn't say that X or Y would be suitable as they just don't make bikes big enough for me.

I think the 21" frames of the P7 or the Crush (orange) are suited to a rider of 6ft 4 inches, and Kenisis make their XC120 in a 21.5" frame.

I am currently in exactly the same position as you though - I'm planning to get a frame, then forks, then the XT set from Merlin. But I have to buy the stuff without being able to test the bike out first - I've not found anywhere that lets you test a H/T. If you are paying mega-money on a F/S bike then you can test it, but I sometimes hear the phrase "a H/T rides like a H/T" wheras I guess F/S bikes do differ from model to model?

    Plus I can't find a decent H/T frame above 21.5"

Its difficult for us big lads!

    Thought about a 29er?
  • Well now its mentioned I actually have, but I'd have to go straight back to the drawing board as I have no idea on the manufacturers, fork travel, use etc... I mean can a 29er tackle the all mountain stuff that a Crush or a Specialized all mountain could?

GT Destroyer. yes I sympathise with you, I have only been able to ride 19" frames out side the shop with comments like " you will need the largest size", well yes but each manufacture has different largest sizes. Scott is just under 23" in XXL

How can you decide? it does my head in trying to work this out with out riding them. To be honest at the £800 ish price bracket I am not really expecting to really test a bike for a few hours, just would be nice to sit on them in the shop. Guess the only way is to ring as many shops as poss and ask if they have large sizes in stock and be prepared to travel.

As for a 29er well can't say I am keen on the idea myself they don't look right in my eyes, if I was taller then perhaps I would.

Is there anything to look for other than frame size in the geometry of the bike to help taller riders, eg, angles etc....

I always say this when people ask about frame size so here goes again:

Consider the length first. The seat height can be adjusted over a range of 320mm with a 400mm seatpost but the length can only be adjusted by 20mm or so at the seat rails and 80mm by swapping stems.

If you find a frame that's the right length, it will almost certainly fit you in the leg.

An XC>120 is quite a short frame for example. I have a 21.5" and I'm only 6' 2 1/2" and I ride it with a 90mm stem and the seatrails right back on a layback post.

  • This is true - I went for a 120mm stem for my GT just to lengthen things out a bit. It felt like my weight was crunched up all over the front of the bike.

Good thread this - I wasn't aware the Scott went up to 23"

I'm 6'3" & have the same leg measurement as you. When I was looking for a bike, I tried a few different frame sizes & the one I felt most comfortable with was a 20". Now I have the seat at the right size, I think I need to fit a headset riser to bring the bars up a bit as I'm stooping a tad too much, but the 21" frame I tried was worse :? My LBS guru also said that when you go more than a 20" frame, you can loose some 'chuckabilty' when travelling off road & down single tracks.
  • Well its almost definately a 21" frame I'll be getting. Its just the frame I can't decide on???
  • Heres a couple of links that may help
I'm 6'3 with a long inside leg. Going for a 19 1/2 inch frame for chuckability. 21 inch just a bit too long and upright.

Well according to both the websites / reading I have done and the geometry of the bike I am most likely to get www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/2008/moun ... ies/6700e/
I do need the 21.5 inch frame. my inside leg is 91cm. The only decision now is to buy it before or after Christmas.

She who likes to think she must be obeyed is not keen at all. (I have been secretly saving for the last few months... hahaha) I would be in massive trouble if I ordered it now so will probably have to be patient and wait till Jan. :-(
  • Not bad mate, not bad at all.

Just to let you know I sat on a 19" framed Crush today, and it felt perfect. The seat was up a bit higher than I'd have liked but it was big, and would have probably done me fine out on the trail.
I'd recommend trying to sit on one before you do go for a big frame.

GT, Glad you liked the crush bit too hard core for the majority for my riding, are you going to take the plunge or still looking?

I have sat on a 17.5" trek 6700 and the guy in the shop (with out me saying anything) said I needed the largest size, it did feel way too small. Still when I am spending 850 quid its got to be right so am going to try and find a shop with a 21.5" 6000 frame.

As a cross reference I am hoping to go to Reading tomorrow to see the Cube Ltd bikes as an alternative. I like the look of the Cube Ltd Race, http://www.cube-bikes.de/xist4c/web/LTD ... 20845_.htm thought its not quite as well specked as the trek it looks very cool in blue and white. Oh well certainly feeling more confident about things the more I read and discuss things on this forum.

Well incase anyone is interested I have seen (and sat on) both the cube and the Trek today. I have concluded from my trip to Reading that the Trek 19.5" is too small (the seat had to be set at the Limit for me.) and the 21.5 was OK but felt just a bit too big and would be hard work to ride off road.

However the Cube Ltd race with the 20" was perfect fit. The shop also offered to swap the 85mm fork for 100mm forks for the same money. And as a bonus when they are assembling the bike they said I could be there and they would cut the fork / fit the head set to suit me as I want a slightly more upright feel. :D

Very worht while day. The Trek dont fit and the Cube does. Enough said!
(Plus the Cube shop offered 12mths 0%) Going to sleep on it over the weekend and prob order on Monday.
    Cheers guys :)
  • Yeah - I'm waiting till the 08 frame comes out, 21" for me.
