Just wondering in relation to Sportives (next year) and not wanting to be stranded or lose much time etc what are the common types of chain breaks - are they easy to fix at the roadside - how difficult is it to fix a broken chain - I can cope with a tyre change etc but am unsure re broken chains.

Thanks

Chain breakage is fairly uncommon with a newish chain. Most common factors are an over change ( to small chainring) of the front mech resulting in the chain getting jammed between the inner chainring and chainstay, an inherently weak link in the chain itself or ,incorrect initial installation.
Might be a good idea to invest in a chain splitter and practise splitting and rejoining an old chain. The Sram type split links make the job easier but IMO if you can do the job without one you should not experience a break that will lose you too much time.
P.S. If you carry a chain splitter you probably will never need it on the road. If you don't you most definitely will. :)

Thanks mate - I think my chain's a KMC one - I'll look into getting a splitter and some links for it.
