Anyone know if there is something going on with them? I went past earlier (didn't have time to stop), but it seemed that the shop was being boarded up, and I'm sure I didn't see any bikes or gear in the windows (but maybe I was mistaken).

I just checked out the website and saw a note saying how is had been down the last 3 days, which makes me even more suspicious that something may be going on....

Spoke to them earlier today and there was no suggestion anything was up. Maybe they're having a refurb.

Perhaps maybe you should phone them before making spurious assumptions.
Do you have any idea how damaging to a company this sort of tittle tattle can be?

Harsh - the OP only asked if anyone knew what (if anything) was going on. I don't recall any "They have gone bust" comments

Strange that you should allude to that which you put in parenthesis and thereby proving my point.
The unsubstantiated inference was there in the OP .
You have just demonstrated this in chosing the words you did.

Oh no, it's the thought police.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.

I can't help it if other people make assumptions...whatever they might be. People always make assumptions about everything in life - it is a fact of life. It is my local bike shop, which I've a lot over the years and I was planning to go to this afternoon as there are a couple of things I need. I saw the boarding up and my first assumption was that maybe they were moving to a new premisis or something, as that wouldn't fit with having a refurb in my mind, and I hadn't seen any signs suggesting a refurb when I went past on Friday evening.

    Your phone not working then?
  • They are now back online and taking orders either over the phone or online.
  • I've bought two bikes from Geoffrey Butler. Great place!

I once bought an energy gel at Butlers. It was sticky and quite sickly tasting.

Perhaps he thought that it was the thought police..?.

On the other hand I could be wrong and is is simply that I thought that he thought it was the thought police?

I thought his response was quite witty. At least I think I thought that.

  • Butlers, IMHO, is a miserable place.
It's my LBS but I really dislike going in there.
I find all but one of the staff, miserable, unhelpful and downright rude sometimes.
I was in there one day and two staff were ripping the pi** out of some guy who had just left after spending several hundred pounds cos he was wearing miss-matched shorts and jersey. It was pathetic.
The shop has some nice stuff in but seems like a throwback to those bike shops in the 70's where they used to be rude and condescending as a matter of course.

I was in there last week and everything seemed normal.
Maybe they'd had a smashed window. Which is not too surprising for that part of Croydon in the evening, given the amount of bars, clubs (and chavs) in the vicinity. Or possibly a break-in.

GB does have a lot of good gear on display and I have generally found them quite helpful. Just that some of the staff are a bit negative. Not as friendly as my LBS (Bigfoot Bikes in Hayes).
Although they do have the occasional end-of-season bargin (Gore jackets etc).

About 12-15 years ago, there was a distinct dearth of decent road shops in the Surrey - apart from Butlers, Pearsons and Sigma Sport that was it - Tony Mills shut down Dauphin Sport, awaiting it's resurrection as Dauphin Cycles. In fact, it it wasn't for the Butler family - there would be no Surrey League, no Butler Cycles and probably no Dauphin Cycles either. Be grateful for small mercies - and if the only gripe is the attitude of the Saturday lads - rather than the range and price of products. Thankfully, theres a few more shops now so I don't have to drive for 2 hours round the M25 and up the A23 to get a decent range and choice of clothing and products.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • i hope they are still going - I am still intending to get a planet x stealth through those guys. They seemd good to me when I went in for a sizing a few months ago.

Has anyone actually called the shop or e-mailed them a link to this page?

I now have the answer. The whole outside is completely boarded up. At first glance you would definitely think that they are closed. However, there are some signs up pointing you to a side entrance, saying business as usual. It seems that they are undergoing a massive refurb given how extreme the boarding is.
  • I'd noticed that gbcycles.co.uk was unaccessible the other day. Still, as mentioned above, it's now up again. Which is just as well, as I found some great advice on the website when looking at Santini socks:

    The Technical Aspects

    Made by Santini
    For feet only

    Who'd have thought...
"Tyres down on your bicycle, your nose feels like an icicle"
  • Well, maybe you could cut a hole in the toe of one of them, rig it to a garden caine, stick it outside and it would then be a windsock...

    ...I'll get me coat.

GB's have some good deals on last season's Campag brake calipers.
