West Side bike path safe with children?

We're considering moving to Inwood (NYC) to be closer to several things, including easy access to a bike path. My wife is concerned about my plan to tow my toddlers to daycare from Inwood down to lower Manhattan--specifically, she's worried about crime as we travel through Harlem.

If anyone can tell me anything about this, I'd appreciate it.

    Its a "Recumbent site", but a friendly enough bunch - even though the name has diffrent connotations in the uk:
