Stumpjumper FSR - help please

Hi guys and girls,
I've recently bought an old Stumpjumper FSR XC of the 99 vintage. It came cheap, but has a few annoying niggles. The font mech (XT) is not changing to the big ring no matter how I adjust it. I have tried both the screws on the mech, as well as trying to adjust the cable tension but to no avail. Do I need a new mech?
I have been out of the mtb scene for about 4 years, but I do know a bit about bikes as I've been riding mtbs for 15 years. Does anyone have one of these bikes, or know what type of derailleur I need to buy to replace it? I think it is BB mounted, top pull.
Is there anything I'm missing here? Any Stumpie owners able to help?
Thanks in advance
Jimmy

Try moving the cage of the mech by hand to see it will physically move. Good guide on Park on how to adjust a front mech precisely.0

The cage moves all the way across when I push it by hand, although the cable just doesn't seem to pull enough to move the cage over to the big ring. I have tried adjusting the high-stop, but it seems to do nothing.
Does it sound like the mech is broken? :shock:0 -
SOunds like there isnt enough cable tension!
Put in the small cog and pull all the slack through and re bolt the cable. Then fine tune with the adjuster on the shifter. Altering the H stop will do nothing if the tension is not high enough to pull the mech to the new position.0 -
Have just tried tensioning the cable further, but the cage just will not move far enough over to engage the big ring. The guy I bought the bike from said it was a spare mech that he had fitted to replace a broken one, and I think he's fitted one that just isn't suited for the frame. No matter what I try I just cannot shift it onto the big ring.
Oh well, off to the shops next week.........0 -
Is the cable routed correctly into the pinch bolt?0

Yes, it is. I've tried putting too much tension into the mech, and even then it simply does not shift far enough over. The whole mech seems to sit too far inboard on the bike, and as it's a bb mount there is no scope for positioning it anywhere else. It's also a pain as it sits so high that in the small ring the chain drags over the cage in the bottom 5 sprockets.
I think someone's just fitted the incorrect mech.0 -
Yeah, doesnt sound right at all!0

Cheers for the help though!0
