My LBS has the Easton Ascent II and also the Orion II at a good end of season discount, and I am considering buying one or other as an upgrade to my current Shimano R550s. Orion II is 1477g, medium profile, while Ascent II is 1419g, shallow profile.

I weigh just under 70kg, 150lb and am more of a climber than a flat, speed merchant. I ride about 100 miles a week and do a few sportives in the summer.

Can anyone help me decide between these two Easton wheels? And what difference does the medium vs shallow profile make?

  • I'm about 68kg and have the Ascent II wheels. I've put around 1000 miles into them so far and they're going well. Can't fault them so far and for the money they're great if you're a lighter rider

The Ascents are a great wheel, what sort of discount as the newer EA90SLX have replaced them, bit heavier though.

£150 discount bringing them down to £330 makes them good value imo. So, coupled with these two comments (thanks!), I think I shall nip in tomorrow and close the deal.

Are those actually what you're looking at? Because the Orion has exactly the same rim as the Ascent, just more spokes.
