Why?

Do they last longer, sound louder than the resin ones and is there more chain wear?

Comments

  • They are more noisy
    They are more flashy
    They have bearings
  • Noise is energy. Your energy!
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks
  • You could always purchase some ceramic ones for about £60.
  • In Engineering practice Nylon (and some other plastics) are accepted as good bearing materials, Aluminium is not.

higher end Shimano jockey wheels have ceramic bearings (around a tenner), no need for anything better IMHO
  • As it happens its ceramic bearing jockey wheels that I am looking at. A nice discreet pimp item

I missed an ebay auction for some tacx ceramic bearing wheels last night. I'm the guy who swoops in at the last minute with a higher bid but this time I timed it wrong and lost the bid. So there is another make on ebay but I'm fairly sure that while the bearing are ceramic the wheel is CNCed aluminium. I'm not keen on this. I also found some tacx ceramic bearing wheels at fisher outdoors for about twice the price of the ebay ones I missed. I think I will get those as they have resin wheels. The other alternative is FSA ones from wiggle but they are twice the price at £60 and I don't feel like spending that much.

I've never seen the ceramic shimano ones. If they are a tenner then they would be the cheapest of all.

I would really stick with what Shimano and Campag are doing. If aluminium was any better - they would be using them. Its not worth faffing round.

I believe Shimano XT pulleys have ceramic bearings, as does Ultergra "Ultegra derailleur uses a low-friction ceramic bushing in the guide pulley, and ball bearing in the tension pulley to increase pulley durability." - there is a selection here

But the ones that are made by the same company as your derailleur. They will work the best and you know they will fit when you get them.
