Anyone got any good ideas for protecting your neck/throat in chilly weather? I have had a look at balaclavas but not sure if I would overheat in one?

I just use a lightweight thermal neck warmer, can also pull up over chin/nose when it's really cold....

I don't know about overheating, but I really needed one last year in the winter as the freezing cold was hitting my neck. Not pleasant. You don't have to pay a lot of money for one either. Don't pay Assos prices.
  • Thanks guys. Yep, I have seen an Assos one for £30...

...which one do you use giant mancp? Do you use one that covers your mouth/nose? If so, does it get rather messy with all the moisture and nose residue after a ride?

Now is the time to buy one I think as the temp in sunny Yorkshire is 7c and I have Man Flu.
  • I have a cheap fleece one for winter. The only problems I find is that it is hard to drink with one on, although I can manage without a drink for shortish rides when it is so cold.

Also they tend to steam your glasses up if you wear them so its a good idea to keep moving (which also keeps you warm :) ).

I couldn't ride without it when it is seriously cold as my nose gets so cold it is really painful and detracts from enjoying the ride  :( .

i use one of these: http://vangard.dk/00037/00047/ (907) which is fine for essex winter weather. I am pretty sure it would be ok for colder regions up the country too!

i bought one off ebay last year, i cant find it now :( it was a cheap one for lining the inside of a motorbike helmet. Did the job though!
  • Thanks, I have purchased a Vangard one, which I hope should cope admirably with the inclement weather conditions in deepest, darkest W Yorks.
  • Have you looked at the Buff - it is a simple tube of material that works as a hat/headband/balaclava - you can get them in different weights from your local outdoor shop. I have been using mine over the past couple of weeks - keeps my head warm with all of the helmet vents!

  • They are not shy on designs are they! They look just the job but sadly your posts came too late as I had purchased a balaclava earlier in the day. Thanks for your suggestions though.

I have three or four of the normal buffs - they do the job for me. Always one under the helmet - summer or winter, and if its reeeealllly cold - I'll have one round my neck and pull that up.
