Hi
My parents have given me a Canon 40D as a birthday present. Now im wanting a zoom lens for it, cant really afford a Canon L lens just yet so im going to have to make do with something a little cheaper, can anyone recommened me a half decent lens with a range of about 70 - 250 / 300 mm.

I got my girlfriend a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Lens a couple of years ago. It's one of the cheaper zooms but worked to good effect when used with a Canon EOS 400D on our trip to South Africa last year. Also used it to take some good pictures at the TdF in London this year.0

It's worth looking at the Tamron or Sigma range. I have a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and love it..
Good reviews here:

cycling and digital SLR photography - thats two expensive hobbies you have acquired
I have got the same zoom as tyskie and it is good for the money. But before you go ahead and buy have a think about what you are planning to be shooting....If you think you will be taking a lot of pictures of high spead subjects, cycling motor racing etc it is probably worth saving up for one of the image stabilisation lenses that canon produce.0 -
I bought the Canon 70-300 (IIRC) lens from Argos of all places, only about £130. Use it with an EOS350D, excellent results.0

I agree with the other comments on here. Think about what you're likely to shoot and pick your lens accordingly. I've also got the 73-300 canon lens and it suits my photography very well. It doesn't go down to a fantastic aperture, so it's not great in low light...but then I don't use it a lot in dim light without a flash. Also bear in mind that with the sensor factor a 300mm lens turns into something closer to 450mm (in old money) so you're going to need plenty of light to get a fast shutter speed just so that you can hold it steady.
Sigma and Tamron both have their advocates - I haven't got any of their lenses so I can't really comment. I'd recommend reading some of the reviews on line and also going along to a local camera shop to try some out. You might even be able to get a loan lens to test drive for a weekend.
Hope that helps.0 -
If you're just an average snapper like the majority of us, then it doesn't really matter. I bought an Olympus E400 with a couple of Zuiko lenses for £200 odd in PC World's sale earlier this year. Superb.
My oldy-worldy 35mm SLRs have had Tamrons stuck up front, work fine.
These days, finding a bad lens is quite difficult.Remember that you are an Englishman and thus have won first prize in the lottery of life.0 -

Looks like im going to go for the Canon EF 70 - 300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, with the Canon £40 cashback offer on this lens it should set me back about £300.0
