We need to buy a new TV and Wifey has decided we're getting a Samsung. It’s an LCD 32” and they do a 100Hz version.
Is there really any benefit to having 100Hz or should we save the extra £150? Whats cycling like on an LCD, in particular this alleged problem with fast moving images? And how bad are they really when it comes to this ghosting/ blurring /hesitation, is it really noticeable on films, sport etc?

My advice would be to view both tv's in a showroom whilst watching sports (say Sat pm in John Lewis or the like) and judge for yourself. You'll be kicking yourself if you get the wrong one. I think it's fair to say that the standard of LCD's has improved dramatically over the last couple of years.
I recently got a Panasonic Viera 32 LCD with 100Hz and it is great for watching football etc...absolutely no ghosting. In fact i'm astonished how good this tv is in general and how easy it was to set it up.
The only cycling i've seen is what's available on Freeview (some TdF highlights and the recent World Champs on BBC) - picture was great.
You could also try the avforum site for detailed peer reviews of TV's. But be warned - you'll come away thinking every TV is flawed in some way.0 -
Is there any point in 100Hz LCD? LCD's don't scan (and therefore flicker) like CRT's and don't rely on persistence of vision. People built 100Hz CRTs to stop the apparent flickering. If the pixel refresh time is low enough (different to refresh rate), does ghosting actually occur anyway? My £99 17" TFT doesn't ghost at all!
Watch out for avforum / what hifi etc. Most of them are smoke and mirrors audiophile bullshit pushers. If it feels right to you, it's perfectly fine.0 -
I've got a Panasonic Viera 32" HD with 100hz and it really is one of the best LCDs I've seen. My friend bought the 50hz version thinking it was a big enough saving to justify it and his wife made him send it back as the ghosting was so bad. They've now gone 100hz and she's happy.0

Interesting. I was thinking of chucking my olde Trinitron and getting one. I'll have to do some investigation I think.0

do you want to watch TV or brag about your spec ?
I have a Hann G model JT261 26" LCD TV with VGA HD HDMI P inP 75Hz blah blah for £175.00 deliverd its brilliant. I have watched over 1000 hours of SkyB+ Tour de France and other cycle races on it and its fab. I plug my laptop into it and surf the net ( picture in picture )or full screen for DVD movies from the laptop etc at the same time as watching the TV
Theres about half a dozen HD programs on per day and they ain't worth the investment yet imo

Mind you my eyes are too crap for HD which is why I've still got a 15 year old Trinitron.0

For HD to be really worthwhile you need a big TV...
The difference between SD and HD on a 32" LCD like mine is noticable but not 'wow'... move to 40" and above and if can look fabulous, particuarly if you have a good source. I've got Sky HD now, but used be on Telewest when they were testing ITV HD... Unfortuantely ITV's usual output is such bad quality anyway, putting it on HD brought it up to BBC's SD output...
On to topic of ghosting it's partially dependent on the source - I used to have a Sony LCD which would ghost adnd pixalate horribly with anything fast moving, unless it came from through the component from DVD, in which case it was fine. My newer Toshiba doesn't pixalate at all, whatever the source.0 -
Second the Panasonic. I have a 100hz Viera and it's top top quality.
Look on a site like www.avforums.com to get an idea.
The Panasonic gets award after award.0 -
I don't know if you've got any kids (or if you've not grown out of being one yourself ), but a lot of the computer games coming out now won't work on anything under 60hz. I'm thinking of the Xbox 360 in particular.0
