Picked up a mountain bike from Evans a couple of weeks ago for jaunts out with the kids riding on the back etc. I've just noticed that the brake cables cross each other and rub against each other where they run down under the frame. My husband bought the same bike and his are parallel and stay about an inch apart all the way along.
my bike is not right is it?

dont you mean the gear cables?

many do have the cabels crossing it is not a problem and it can allow better routing at the handle bar end.

    neither is correct or wrong.

Yep, plenty of people like to set bikes up in this way. It can help to make things neater round the head tube and stop thye cable outers pressing so hard on the head tube which will eventually wear through the paint.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.

Thanks for your replies - yes, you were right, it's actually the gear cables. I guess that different mechanics have their own preference for setting up these cables given that the same two bikes from the same shop are set up differently.
    thanks for the reassurance.
