I have an 07 XT hollow tech 11 chainset and would like to replace the outer ring with the one off the 08 chainset. Is this possible, and if so can you buy the ring on it's own yet.

Cheers,

Andy.

if they have the same BCD then yes. have a lock on shimanos webby. you want a bcd of 104mm.

  • Just had a look and the bcd is 104 for the 08's, so should work :D Do you know of anywhere that sells them on their own yet? I have tried all the usual sites but nada so far. Would my lbs be able to get them for repairs etc?

Any reason you have to have genuine Shimano? I don't think I'm alone in my experience that Shimano chainrings are made from cheese. Given the choice, I'd be looking at Blackspire or Middleburn. I've found the Blackspire Super Pro range are the mutts nuts and the change on them is super slick.

    Just a thought.

  • We've all chewed through the alloy shimano rings in no time, but tbh I agree with Dave, don't buy the genuine shimano rings, get some by someone who is a real master at it. I currently have middleburn hardcoat slick shift rings on my 07 xt cranks and they are flawless, still look fine, other than a little loss of hardcoat from cross running my chain, after 6 months, whereas my shimano ones were unusable after 4 months.
  • Well apparently the 08 rings are supposed to be much stronger than the old ones, and a lot of people say you get slicker shifts with the Shimano's. I had a lot of problems with my old Truvative Trueshift chainset which were completely cured once i switched over to Shimano. Also i think it looks good  All this is academic at the moment though as i cant find anywhere that dose the 08 XT ring on it's own yet, so might go with Blackburn after all.

  • I have used Race Face rings as an aftermarket fitment to my chainset following the shimano V. Quick wear rate and have found these to be both good shifting and nice looking and after about 4 months look like i only put them on yesterday.

Ooo they do fit then. I asked on hear ages ago wheather they would fit and got no replies, so assumed it was a stupid question. The Race rings in silver would look bloody good :D
