James Toseland - two times World Superbikes champion

There are several deserving sportsmen and women out there who perform consistently at the top of their field, but who will not win as they (and the sports in which they compete) do not get the popular recognition required. They've pretty much all been covered in the previous posts, so I won't go over them.

My vote would be Joe Calzaghe at the moment but that's 'cos I like boxing (as well as many other sports). Few can deny that his record is outstanding - undisputed world champion at his weight and now looking outside his weight just to find someone else to beat.

  • The whole programme is a farce, I feel the last credible winner was Paula Radcliffe, and as for last year..... don't get me started.

Joe Calzaghe would be a worthy winner, on effort and training alone, but sadly I fear Lewis will win by a country mile. I'll bet Chrissie Wellington does'nt even get a mention, just the usual Football, Football and more F*****g Football topped with Horse Racing & Snooker.

    Enough....rant over.

James Toseland - you mean the guy who won that that series of motorobike races for guys who can't hack it in MotoGP? Don't see why Hamilton should win yet - he still hasn't won the big prize and in fact had it in his grasp and yet lost - next year, yes if he achieves success.

Damon Hill won it for doing pretty much the same thing in the 90s. Jenson button got in the final ten last year for winning one race .

    Hamilton will win I'm sure

Bizarely Tim Henman is in top 10 on the BBC site just for announcing his retirement whereas Andy Murray isn't

Even though Murray is ranked 11 in the world in a truly global sport played by millions despite missing the main part of the seaseon

2 completely different genres of racing... That's like saying BTC for guys who can't hack it in F1...

Wow, some justice! Joe Calzaghe wins! I wonder how that happened? Maybe because his dad won the coach of the year and they both came accross very well in the snippets I saw. Didn't watch most of it so only just saw the result on the BBC site. I thought Hamilton was a shoo in though. Good to see 2 boxers in the top 3 and Enzo given some credit too. Good result.

I see Ohuruogo didn't do too well. Guess the public aren't too impressed by comebacks from missed tests.

    Sports Personality voting:
    1. Joe Calzaghe 177,748 (28.19%)
    2. Lewis Hamilton 122,649 (19.45%)
    3. Ricky Hatton 85,280 (13.53%)
    4. James Toseland 84,570 (13.41%)
    5. Jason Robinson 67,061 (10.64%)
    6. Paula Radcliffe 34,895 (5.53%)
    7. Jonny Wilkinson 30,302 (4.81%)
    8. Andy Murray 13,242 (2.1%)
    9. Justin Rose 10,227 (1.62%)
    10. Christine Ohuruogu 4,481 (0.71%)

Great programme as well. And I don't mind saying I had a tear in my eye when Bobby Robson was on.

Pleasantly surprised to see Joe Calzaghe winning it.

I think the voting figures are inaccurate.

I understood that actually Christine Ohuruogu won the award, but failed to turn up 3 times to collect the same

    I agree.

James Toseland looked a bit worried riding that pricless WSB winning Fireblade down that shiney/slippy ramp. Don't think he would have lived that down if slid down that on his arse..

I had a lump in my throat as well - he once asked me & Mr P for directions when we were walking around Edinburgh. It was around the time when the Hearts managers job was up for grabs. My husband is a hearts fan so had a bit of sport with him - he was a really nice gent.

James Toseland! I've never seen him without a helmet on - he was very nice. Very nice indeed!!

Did you see Victoria Pendleton sat in the audience? She looked very glamorous.

Team of the year? Anyone want to comment on that? Obviously I'm biased, but my vote for heroic failure would have gone to Scotland's footballers rather than England's rugby players. Both got beaten twice by the best team in the world, both beat France, but one of them did it twice. And I would argue that Scotland Football were much crapper at the start of their tournament than England Rugby were at the start of theirs, certainly in terms of world rankings.

Or, they could have given the prize to the GB Cycling team, who actually won something, in fact they keep winning things. That'll be the day, though.

Anyway, apart from Bobby Robson, who was just wonderful, what I saw of it was pretty naff, as always.

The BBC is biased towards the Southerners, don't know why though.

I too, even though I'm Welsh, would have preferred Scotland to get the team award, England Rugby team got lucky in a couple of matches.

Its team of the year- not most improved team. Scotland never got to World Cup semi-finals!

however- I agree with you re cycling team

Sorry, I don't know who you're referring to but that wasn't Victoria Pendleton in the audience - she has been in Beijing this weekend at the Track World Cup.

And on Sunday VP was having a serious dose of velodrome burns treated and splinters removed having got caught up in an accident in the Keirin final which left only 2 riders upright :(

I don't know how the engine size compares, but World Super Bikes, just like BTCC or WTCC cars are based on stock bikes that you can walk into a shop and buy. MotoGP bikes are racing prototypes like F1 cars.

Edit: In 2007, the engines in World Super Bikes were 1,000cc, and MotoGP bikes had 800cc engines. James Toseland is switching to MotoGP for 2008.

    Completely different.

Superbikes are standard road bikes with race parts fitted. (bit more complicated than that but essentially road bikes). Series is there to help manufacturers sell bikes.

MotoGP bikes are like F1 cars, handbuilt frames, engines, bodywork.

Well, fancy that - clearly it wasn't her after all. Whoever it was looked spookily like her 8)
  • I was as happy as I was suprised to see Joe Calzaghe win, and very happy his dad Enzo getting the recognition he deserves outside the sport. If they'd have given the team prize to the cyclists and second place for sports personality to Toseland instead of Hamilton it would have made a very good set of results indeed.

My good god a welshman who doesnt like the english rugby team...that must surely be the first

at least the england rugby team did get to the final of something whereas scotland didn't even qualify (no offence, they ve been spellbinding compared to england). The truthful winner of course is the cyclists but we all know that snowball in hell had a better chance
