The frame I'm about to purchase is listed as having a 57mm drop in terms of the brakes, I was hoping to use my Campag centaurs. Will they work, or will I need new longer brakes???

The drop referred to here means the distance from the centre of the brake bolt to the brake pads themselves. Best explained here. As always.

Your Centaur levers will be fine.
  • Are these brakes are for the Ambrosio frame you mention in another thread ? I would ask whoever you're buying the frame from . THey should know although I suspect that although the Campag levers will be fine you may need some long drop calipers for the frame . I had the same problem with a winter frame last year , campag calipers are too short so I ended up using some Tektros instead with Mirage levers .

Yes I did actually mean calipers, its the Guido that I was looking at. From your response I'm guessing the campag caliper is too shallow?

    Yes, you'll need different calipers

    Maybe, maybe not.

Unless theframe has been specifically built to use 57mm brakes at the limit of their reach then all the manufacturer is telling you is that 49mm will not work. If your Centaur calipers are from 2006 then you will find that they have a maximum reach of 52mm. Hence they might work.

I found this measurent for 2006 Centaur by accident one day and bought some to go on my Roberts Touring bike to replace the Shimano 57mm which were not at the bottom of their reach. The front fitted fine, the rear needed about 54mm. Drat and double drat.

You will be able to use them but the brake pads will be at the extreme end of the range of adjustment. Although not billed as deep drop, Mirage, Veloce and Centaur will all work on a 57mm frame without any performance issues - Chorus and Record will not.

They do, however, look a bit odd in comparison to proper deep drop offerings from Shimano or Tektro

AndyLav, I recently tried to find the Shimano calipers that are deep-drop - Which ones are deep drop, as I can't find them on the Shimano website?

Shimano do 2 deep drop calipers - BR-A550 (RX100) & BR-R600 (Ultegra) although strangely both show as £39.99 here:

That's because you get a pair of the RX100 and only one of the Ultegra standard ones for that price!

    Thanks chaps.
I have a pair of 2007 deep-drop Tektros at the moment - They're OK, however not as good as my 105 calipers; so in absence of any other toys for Xmas, I was thinking about a frivolous wallet-busting upgrade, just to see if they're much better!
