I'm due to start a new job where I will be coming into Euston on the train and would like to ride to the Bishopsgate/Liverpool St area. Can anyone recommend a reasonable safe route suitable for a folder?

Also, I'm not sure whether to buy a Brompton or a Mezzo? Any advice would be welcome on that front also.

Thanks.
Paul.

If I did that I'd do Pentonville Road, City Road, Old Street.

I never come in that way, but sometimes go that way home now that the west side of Hyde Park is shut off after dark.

Or you could drop down into the university area (Corams fields, Wc1), lots of cycle paths road round there if that's what you're looking for, and sheep, BAAA!

Buy a Brompton, they fold much neater and quicker than a Mezzo and are hence easier to carry through the crush at Euston. Also Gearing, brakes and tires seem better on the Brommy making it a better ride.

I do Euston to West End so can't advise on the route.

I'm with you on that one - I've cycled round it a couple of times in both directions on that route and it certainly gets the adrenaline going  Generally people drive round there with too much speed and an abject lack of lane discipline - oh, wait, it's a road, why am I surprised!?

Not everyone is that bad. The issue is that it's on the edge of the congestion charging zone on the north ring road. Makes people panic like mad usually.
  • I used to work in Bishopsgate and now work near Euston. If I were to cycle this route I do the following - see map link...

Avoids most of the heavy traffic this way, if slightly longer winded. Nice cut through along Smithfield Market too.
  • Smithfield is a haven for insane hell's angel motorcycle couriers, taxi's, reversing meat wagons and drunken locals milling around to the bars etc. Act with caution.

Ironically I used to work at a company overlooking Smithfields and old street roundabout :P

How did you manage that? They're about a mile apart with a load of buildings in between! Take your point about reversing meat wagons though - saying that, I'll take my chances with them over the OSR anyday.
