Mixing Shimano & Campag

I know it's no usual, but in a drive for lightness, I have come up with the idea of a Dura-Ace groupset, except for the BB and Crankset, which I would replace with Campag Chorus Compact Carbon Crankset, 34-50T and Campagnolo Record Ultra Torque Bottom Bracket Cup Set.

I would keep the Dura-Ace 10S chain, as I will have the casette.

From my research I believe that this system will work, but do I go for the Campag or Shimano Front Derailleur? My guess is Shimano, as it directly links to the STI.

Also, has anybody tried this, what is the outcome, does it run smoothly, good changeover from 50 to 34? My initial thoughts were to go with a Stronglite Vulcan Compact, but I can get a good deal on the Campag, and have it fitting as part of the bike build.

Any advice appreciated.
So this little yellow braclet makes me a better cyclist?

You'll have no problems. I run a Campag ten-speed compact with a 105 front mech from eight-speed days and gearchanges are as smooth as you need them to be. You can use any chainset, they will all work with any drive system.

Personally I would go for either 48/34 or 50/36 on a compact. I started out with the 50/34 and it is a pain in the arse, the sixteen tooth gap between rings is too much.

I'd also fit a decent KMC chain. In my opinion much better shifting that either Campag or Shimano chains.

Seconded, and a damn sight easier to fit too.

Where does compatability end? Presumeably you can't use a campag mech on a shimano casette can you?

You can get a widget (Jtek Shiftmate) that will allow you to do it.

Out of the box the only things that matters for compatability are the shifters, rear mech and cassette. Front mechs, chainsets and chains (provided they are narrow enough for your system) can be sourced from anywhere.

FWIW, I'm using DA 10 everything else with a Ritchey Logic 50x34 crankset (8 speed rings) and it works fine. Can't see whay there'd be any problems with Campag cranks - and the DA front mech works fine with the R-700 50x34T rings too...
  • Thanks for all the replies guys. Whenever I ask the LBS they tell me not to mix, but I reckon thats because they buy in the groupset.

The reason I ask is because I prefer the gearing available with shimano for mountain trips. I currently stick a 11-28 shimano cassette on when I head for the hills which I find ideal. But in 10 speed, which I'm going to kit my new steed out with, Campag only offer a 13-29 whereas I could get a 12-27 with Shimano which is more sensible and means I could stick with a short cage mech. I presume I'd have to get a medium cage mech to cope with a 29?

Will you need a medium cage for 13-29 - maybe! That seems to be the consensus here. Many have tried the short cage mech and gotten away without problems, but this depends on what difference there is between your chainrings, derailleur hanger geometry, chain length, etc, etc. Camnpag have basically said in their catalog that "these are our recommendations, but YMMV... "

It's worth trying with what you have before spending money. OTOH, if you need to buy a mech anyway, the medium cage weighs <5 grams more than the short cage IIRC. I doubt anyone is really going to notice this...

    Hmm..well, I'll have a think on that.
I don't really understand why you can't mix and match casette sprokets. Why not have a system where you can buy what sprokets you want. 13 isn't a very low gear considering if you're going up something that requires a 29 you've got to come down something pretty big the other side! For 10 speed I'd buy an 11 a 28 and everything in between.

Aha! Thanks for that link.....but at £100 a bit steep....
