Has anybody ACTUALLY seen a cyclist setting off a speed camera?

Not a speed camera, but I have seen the V.C. Halton set off one of those Traffic Speed Advisory signs that light up and remind you that you should only be doing 30mph :)

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

Yep, I set one off every morning on a nice downhill road. There is also a camera about 100m further down but have never managed to set that off.
  • I've been told that a person on a bike is not big enough to set of a speed camera. True or not I don't know. But I've never been able to set one off and I've been through a few at well over the recomended speed :D

  • I thought I'd been caught by a camera recentlt as it gave a double flash as i went past. I was quite startled, partly because i was only doing 20 in a 30 zone.Realisation dawned when i remembered the car going past in the opposite direction which was the real culprit.

I used to set off the "slow down" signs quite regularly around here (partly because they are oversensitive!) but since I traded steel frame for carbon (which made me much faster), nothing. Very disappointing.

Also, my carbon frame acts as a cloaking device at rural traffic lights (the ones they use as a cheap alternative to strengthening bridges) and I either have to wait for the next car (can be a while around here) or jump the lights.

I did once see a police officer with a hairdryer by the road in a village 30mph zone. Naturally, I sprinted for the 30 signs, grinning at him, but I didn't get a reaction. Such professionalism in one so young!

  • There's a classic speed camera on downhill section in Bitterne in Southampton where it would be easy to freewheel down doing more than 30mph. I often wondered what would happen if I put a some alu foil under my jersey. Given that it was used to fool the nazis during the war and is still used in rescue flares and as chaff, then I'm pretty certain it would have had the desired effect. Nearest speed camera to me now is about 80 miles away.

I've got one of these at the entrance to the town I live in. Whenever I'm coming home on the bike I sprint to see how fast I'm going. Best so far is 37mph (wind assisted).

My dad and a friend got pulled over by the police and given a ticking off for speeding on a tandem when he was a lot younger.

Nope, but I have had a mobile speed-trap gun pointed at me a few years ago; I think the officers in question did it solely out of idle curiosity! I was only doing 20-ish at the time, so probably nothing earth-shattering to discuss over tea & biscuits once they got back to the station.
