I'm looking for a new set of wheels with a budget of up to £250 for XC use, preferably disc only.

There are loads of posts/comments on wheels consisting of Hope, DT, Shimano, Mavic RIMS etc but not found too much on Mavic Wheelsets for MTB.

What are their hubs like compared to Hope / Shimano? I love the flat bladed 24 spoke look but it's no good if the hubs are pap.

The set mainly in question is the 2008 Crosstrail Disc, but others considered are Hope Hoops DT4.2d (Pro 11) , Hope Pro 11 XC717 or Shimano XT on either DT4.2 or XC717.

  • I'd recommend merlin wheels, XC717 on proII works out at 214 for all silver without rim tape, so you should easily be able to do it. Merlin build great wheels, although they take a little longer to arrive than some. I've had two sets (XM719 on proII and XC717 on deore) and they are all still true despite some serious hammering.
