Grinding/creaking noise from cranks

I've just had my bike serviced in LBS - they installed a new cassette and chain. It made a big difference (the bike has had 5000 miles with stock parts) but I noticed when I pedal hard (up the hill), there is this grinding or creaking coming out of the cranks - particularly the drive side - once every pedal strike. The crankset is FSA Gossamer Megaexo with external bearings BB. Is the BB worn out? I cleaned and greased it few month ago. Now I should go back to the LBS, but 1. today they are closed, 2. They are not really local, I bought the bike from them with some servicing included which I've now used up and I don't want to use them again because 3. they are not trustworhy IMO
Could it be anything obvious like too/not enough tightened bolts or BB cups?
Thanks for your opinions

Does it happen on both chain rings. Check your rings for wear. The noise could be that the new chain has not yet bedded in to the old rings.
Also check that the front mech cage is not rubbing on the chain when things flex a bit under power.
If it was quiet before the service then it is not likely to be the BB.
  • I had a similar problem on my bike, on climbs a clicking/creaking.

It was eventually traced to the freehub body.
  • John.T thanks. It's not the front derailleur - I already had a look.. The other suggestion is likely to be true, though. It happens less on the middle chainring which is less worn out than the outer one.

If it is the rings then it should settle down fairly quickly.

I had a similar problem, traced to a couple of loose chainring bolts.
