I need to replace the cables and housings for the friction shifters on my Carlton.

Will cables designed for modern indexed systems be the right size to work with older friction shifters ?

I always use the teflon lined modern cables and s/steel inners, even my '48 bates and Carlton had them. They give a much better action and firmer brake/gear. Though sometimes you find you can't use a ferrule on the end of the outer as the stops can be a little smaller. Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

The cable housings that sit between the cable stops on the bottom bracket have 25 years of dirt and rust inside them and does not make for smooth shifting ! Hopefully those modern cables/housings will shift a bit smoother.
