Prescription drugs = 2mph onto ave speed

All,

Here is a wee question I was wondering some whizz out there could help me with.

I've been doing a loop here in Jakarta for the past few weekends, on which I have been averaging about 15-16mph. It's not a great ave speed I know considering it is pretty flat, but this is my 1st riding in about a year due to travelling and an overwhelming fear of being killed on Jakarta's roads.

Last week I was struck down with Para Typhoid - not pleasant I can tell you. So I am on 3 drugs. One is a strong antibiotic, one is to stop my stomach from cramping and the other is green! I don't know what that one does!

So Yesterday, after being stir crazy in the house for 7 days, I decide I am well enough to go for a blast on the bike and lo and behold I improved my average to 18mph - which to me is significant.

When I got home I felt great (although extremely sweaty). Very little pain etc.

At first I was just thinking it was a little cooler (just 27C  ), maybe less traffic lights etc, but fact is it felt easier to maintain the pace over the 20 miles.

So then I turned to the drugs (no not like that) and had a think about them......the only thing I could think was that the anti-cramping medicine also helped the legs stay strong over the pace and up the very few hills.....do you think?

Then I thought that someone on the forum might know more about this in terms of past experience and whether anti cramping medicines are banned in cycling!

Cheers

  • It could just be that the illness in its incubation period had suppressed your increased fitness , and the enforced rest has meant that you have come back to it feeling rested and showing just how much you'd gained!
  • Now I Do like that explanation - "surpressed fitness" "How much I have gained" love it. 8)

No need for any answers from anyone else please, this is the story I am sticking to.

Now I wonder if I have any other surpressed talents in my system.....

    Thanks Ma Coli.
  • Update......

Don't ride your bike when you are on prescription drugs and still in recovery.

Full relapse today and now more ill than ever. Doctor enraged when I told them I had gone back to work, so I kept the cycling bit out incase she lynched me.

Rest rest rest.......this time I'll listen.
