My winter hack bike needs new wheels and I'm tempted by the Shimano R500's as they seem a bargain at under £50. however my bike has a 7 speed set up and for budget reasons I'm happy to keep it that way - can i use these wheels with a 7 speed cassette - it is as simple as using spacers?
thanks
Paul

Just so happens that a used 8 speed cog works pretty well as a spacer :)

The only other possible issue you might have is rear spacing. 7-speed spacing is 126mm (though later ones did come with 130 spacing). If yours is 126, then you'll either have to spring the rear end a bit to get an 8-speed wheel in or if it's steel get it respaced.
  • I have a steel frame so hopefully will be able to spread it - (though I am looking for a good, older wheel on ebay)
