Reuse of hubs

In a recent thread it was implied that it was unsafe to build a wheel using a secondhand hub especially if the wheel lacing pattern was altered.I always believed that you bought the best hubs and reused such hubs as and when rims wore out.
Can anyone tell me what I should do in future with used hubs of high quality

Altering the lacing pattern is not a good idea, but you can re-use hubs many times provided the spoke holes don't look knackered.

I was looking to re-use some old hubs, the only thing that stopped me was the uniglide cassette - not hyperglide - locking sprocket not lockring.....getting very hard to get sprockets for..

    I'd certainly re-use a well maintained hub
