For properly cold, Specialized Radiant. For when you just want to keep the wind off I have some Gore Windstopper ones which work very well (also use them for XC skiing) - don't remember what model, sorry! I'd suggest though that gloves are one of the more personal items, and what works for me might not for you.

I've got last years Spesh Radiants which I use when its really bitter or lashing down.
They're quite chunky but have been really good at keeping the cold and wet out.
They've also have some BG style padding on the palms.

I got some from Decathlon for £2.40, 81% off RRP. Not massively thick but more than enough and doesn't affect the shifting too much. They only had really unpopular sizes, but somehow XXXL gloves fitted me fine although I'm a medium in everything else.
    I like bikes...

There's a great review in Cycling Plus at the moment, some really good gloves depending on whether you want waterproof or windproof and varying degrees of warmth

Probably not relevant for most UK riders, but If it's properly cold (minus 10C and below) you need mittens. Any gloves, however good, won't really work as they isolate the fingers from each other. I bought three successively warmer and chunkier pairs of gloves at considerable expense before I realised this. You get the hang of gear changing while wearing them and it's actually easier with road bike shifters than with MTB thumbshifters.
