Tube Valves

I have just had my rear wheel replaced under warranty but the new one is drilled for a presta valve not schrader, which is what all my tubes are - schrader.

Can I drill the wheel out to take a schrader valve or is it advisable to get some presta tubes instead, to suit the new rear wheel?

Therefore can I run my existing front wheel (schrader) on presta valve tubes to save taking two different types of inner tubes out on rides?

  • You may not need to drill it...

If you have a look closely there may be a mini 'shim' like plug that you can 'just' ping out...

if not... then I don't know...

There's no shim in the wheel to take out, and I don;t think I can drill it either after another close look as the width of the wheel on the line of the valve is not much larger than the hole. Therefore drilling it will cut into the side-wall of the rim.

I'll have to get it back to the shop and have them swap it.

Does anyone know if there are rims that are valve specific?

i.e. are DT Swiss XR4.2D rims only Presta valve compatible?
