Winter Clothing

With the onset of winter I'm considering beefing up my clothing collection so I can get out in wetter conditions, this would be for XC for 1 - 3 hr rides.

Two other concerns I'm turning over in my mind are that I get quite hot when riding so its got to be breathable and the fact that some of the trails around here are narrow or can get overgrown, so I don't want something thats going to rip if I just catch it on a bush, or have a minor spill.

I was looking at the Altura Night Vision jacket, or the Crosslite which has got a good review on Bikerader, are these worthwhile?

Or am I better off considering a windproof shell which is also shower proof which I'm guessing are more durable (can't see myself going out in a full out storm!)? If so which one?

A lot of questions I know but if you can help me out with my deliberations any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • I bought a Crosslite about 3 months ago and its been fantastic. I've found it very light and compact. Its peformed faultlessly in the wet, keeping me completely dry and fairly cool on the climbs. Highly recommended!

    Hope this is useful!

Appreciate that, Happy Clown, only other question is how do you rate its toughness against tears etc?
  • I have a Night vision. Its a great jacket but breathability is not one of its strong points.
I tend to keep it for colder days,or shorter rides.
I wear my Howies extra miler,on longer rides which sacrifices some ultimate waterproofing for better breathability.
I have to say though, that the Altura is much better constructed and a better fit than the Howies jacket.
My ideal would be a combination of the properties of both.

  • Hmmm, I'm afriad to say that I don't really have any idea! It seems like pretty tough material, and there is nothing on it that could obviously catch on passing objects. I haven't had any recent spills on my bike (watch me break my leg next time i go out!) so it hasn't seen any real abuse yet, touch wood.

    Cheers guys appreciate the input.

After going round and round in circles studying reviews etc I must confess to be leaning more towards the Night Vision as its apparently more durable, has a couple more features including the pit zips which i hope will make up for the less efficient breathability.

Thanks again - Still Pondering!!!!!!!!!!
