I'm a big guy at 6"5 and 15 stone and i always buckle my rear wheel. I use a giant hardtail for downhilling, jumping and commuting. Does anyone know a wheel that won't buckle so easily because it's getting really annoying. I've never really had a good quality rear wheel so can someone reccommend me one? I take care not to have hard hits against it but it just keeps buckling. Also will getting some bigger tyres like 2.3s help not them not to buckle so easily? Thanks alot for the help!

  • Whilst stronger wheels will help, the build is crucial. I'd, depending on budget, buy probably a mavic 721 on the best hubs you can with DT revolutions (if they are the double butted spokes). As for hubs, I'd go for deore xt proII according to funds.

Heres a good wheelset . I use this and its front wheel on my Cannondale . Its thickened rim is great for taking nasty punishment but still light enough to be a xc wheel BTW I weigh 18 stone and this wheel really can rip on a DH rock gardens where i ride
  • First up, don't get the DT Revolution spokes - these are the lightweight spokes mainly designed for racing use or low punishment in a day to day context. It's DT Comp you need.

However, ride_whenever is right to say the build is crucial. For this reason get the wheel built somewhere like Merlin where wheels are a speciality.

I think the above suggestion of DT5.1 rims is a good one - max rider weight recommendation for this rim is 110kgs so gives you lots of slack if you get them built up properly (and I'm sure they go conservative on these). Look them up on the DT Swiss website. You could manage this for less than £70 for a rear on an XT hub with DT Comp spokes built by Merlin as currently doing great discounts on wheelbuilds which is an awful lot cheaper than the Evans wheel above.
  • Sorry about the revs, i can never remember which ones are the decent strength DB ones! I would really recommend steering clear of wheels pre-built, get them built by a good wheelbuilder (like merlin) and phone them up when you order and say you are a big guy who likes to really hammer it down the mountains and they should be able to get them tensioned a bit higher for you.

iv put halo sas wheels on my bike.. im a bit of a big chap and they have never let me down...

Halo SAS wheels are destined to be THE Ultimate jump/DH wheels. The SAS wheels use the Combat Evolved SAS rim with Double eyelets and double system joint, mated together with the high specification Halo Spin Doctor sealed bearing Disc hubs (Front/Rear) using Black ED finished spokes. (48 on rear for the ultimate strength, 36 on front for reduced weight.) Available in Black or Gold Anodised, or White Powdercoat finish. The Spin Doctor signals an end to Front hub compatibility problems. This is a 20mm front hub that is supplied with a QR9 axle set, allowing ONE hub/wheel to fit with either regular OR 20mm fork options.

  • The other thing to consider is that mavic spares can be an utter pig to get hold of, whereas if you ask hope nicely they'll post small bits to you for free!
  • What do you guys think of 24seven supercross wheels?
  • anyone?
