Ribble winter frames and SKS mudguards - do they work?

Tried fitting some SKS Thermoplastic mudguards to my Ribble winter bike this evening. The front went on ok, but the rear bracket is too close to the tyre and prevents the wheel going round. Do they simply not work with the Ribble frames?

I've got SKS guards with the same frame as yourself and they are ok with 23mm tyres though there is not much clearance to spare. What size tyres are you using?

i had the same problem when i fitted some SKS on wednesday.

I ended up bending the braket, the four bits that bend inwards, i bet more so that the mudguard would go in without a problem, but didnt catch the tyre (can draw a pic if you want)

  • I'm running 23mm tyres.

Will - I had thought about bending the prongs on the bracket too as they stick out a lot
  • Is it the four prongs that are catching the tyre? The mudguard is not meant to move through this bracket, the prongs should be bent and then squeezed together with pliers so that they grip the mudguard from underneath and prevent it from moving. Have had 25mm tyres on my ribble winter trainer without any clearance issues at all.
  • Just a thought, what size frames do you have? This is a 50cm frame. It seems to me that the brake bridge is too low down to allow sufficient room for the bracket to move up/down but I'll look at it later.

Just got back from a tough ride and knackered :)
  • Thanks for your help guys, now sorted. Much easier to do with the bike upside down! A bit of bending was required to give the guard the same curve as the tyre
